Why I don’t mind jury duty

  • •It’s the only place to see a truly random sampling of people from your community. Only certain kinds of people go to the public library, eat dinner at the restaurants you like, or hang out at the park. Everybody has to go to jury duty, even if you avoid actually serving.
  • •For a country that believes in the innocence of the accused until proven guilty and guarantees those who are detained a fair trial most of the time, it seems to me that showing up is the least we can do to support that.
  • •As a story-teller, jury duty offers a fairly robust glimpse into the human drama of a total stranger.
  • •You can make a friend.
